OK, I totally fell for the scam.

The usual random encounter with pushy "gotta sell some steaks fast" delivery guy who accosted me on the street led to some haggling and a hurried sale of a package of "filet mignon" that turned out to be ranch steak (a tough and inferior cut).

I should have look more carefully at the label but I was in a rush, it was an unfamiliar situation, etc. etc. In fact, in the situation I was the sucker.

I haven't tried the steaks yet but I know I way way way overpaid so even if it's good, I won't enjoy it.

Perhaps because of Sonoma Cattle Exchange's poor reputation, this truck's label was painted over, though I could still see the brand name on the truck.

Lesson learned: don't buy street meat.

A guy stopped me on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley and asked if I lived in the area, said he was here to make a delivery to a sorority house but they had cut their order and he had meat and fish that he would sell at half price (frozen). He showed me a brochure that listed the package and prices--for the fish, it included lobster tails and scallops. He opened the carton and showed me the contents, I did not pay good attention to the weight and contents. I paid $200 for a box of what looks like pretty nice fish filets--tilapia, swordfish, mahi mahi, ahi tuna, two kinds of shrimp. Each type is 2.5 pounds total. When I now calculate the cost of each based on $15/pound, it would be about $45 for each of the fish and about $15 each for the two shrimp. So that is $180 for the fish and $30 for the shrimp. So it isn't a bargain, and more expensive than Trader Joe's and Berkeley Bowl. There are stickers that say "not for retail" sale. there are bait-and-switch aspects--no lobster or scallops, but he only showed me the brochure that said that, he did actually say there were lobster tails... I am disappointed in myself for not being more cautious.
